The continuous line will produce specialist panels, including boards for timber construction, with production scheduled to begin in summer 2027.

The project is being developed by elka-Holzwerke and will replace three ageing presses at its existing factory. The new installation will manufacture particleboard, including esb and esb Plus construction panels made from regional fresh wood.

The new installation will produce particleboard, including the company’s esb and esb Plus construction panels made from regional fresh wood. elka’s announced product programme covers P1–P6 boards in thicknesses of 12–50 mm, with densities ranging from approximately 500 to 720 kg/m³ depending on thickness. The continuous press will allow a wider choice of panel dimensions.

Although marketed as alternatives to OSB, esb boards are particleboard products. They are used in timber construction, including floors, walls and roofs, where applications include bracing timber-frame structures.

Dieffenbacher is supplying the new line, which will replace single-opening presses installed in 1968, 1973 and 1990. Equipment installation is expected to begin around the turn of 2026/2027. The order includes mat-forming equipment, a continuous press, raw-board handling, exhaust treatment and the EVORIS digital production-monitoring system.

elka held a topping-out ceremony on 5 October. Managing partner Karl-Robert Kuntz said the existing equipment no longer offered a viable long-term economic future. The investment exceeds the company’s annual turnover, although an exact amount has not been disclosed.

The modernisation has been under way since 2022 while existing production continues. Completed stages include a cutting centre, a knife-ring flaker and renewed screening and gluing systems. The next phases include a forming and pressing section approximately 165 metres long, a low-temperature dryer and enclosed storage for sawdust and wood chips. The wider programme is expected to continue through 2028.

Guests attend the topping-out ceremony for elka-Holzwerke’s new particleboard line and energy plant in Morbach on 5 October 2026

A biomass energy plant with just under 20 MW of thermal output will supply heat for drying and pressing. Commissioning is planned for late 2027. According to Dieffenbacher, the plant can burn fresh biomass and waste wood. Waste wood will be used as an energy source; elka says its particleboard products are manufactured without recovered wood.

Morbach combines sawmilling and panel manufacturing at one integrated site, employing approximately 220 people. Alongside particleboard and esb construction boards, elka produces spruce and Douglas fir sawn timber and solid wood panels. Most sawlogs are sourced within roughly 150 km of the factory.

The company reports that its sawmill processes approximately 300,000 m³ of spruce and Douglas fir sawlogs annually. This figure refers to roundwood input rather than finished sawn timber output. Its lumber supplies construction, packaging and timber merchants, mainly in Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands and the UK.

At the ceremony, managing partner Larissa Kuntz called for dependable wood supplies throughout the year and longer-term coordination between forest management, processing and timber construction. elka is targeting a reduction of approximately 40% in CO₂ emissions at Morbach through the investment programme.

A new particleboard line and biomass energy plant are taking shape at Morbach in western Germany, as part of an investment in the high double-digit-million-euro range.
