European suppliers retained a substantial share of the market, but shipments from the Nordic countries and Austria remained below last year\u2019s levels.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>During January\u2013August, Japan imported 2.084 million m\u00b3 of softwood lumber, down 17.6% from the corresponding period of 2025. Sweden, Finland and Austria together supplied 985,000 m\u00b3, accounting for approximately 47% of the total, before deliveries from other European countries are included.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nordic suppliers retain leading positions despite lower volumes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sweden remained Japan\u2019s largest softwood lumber supplier over the first eight months, delivering 449,487 m\u00b3, down 16.2%. Finland followed with 442,357 m\u00b3, a decrease of 15.1%, while Austrian shipments fell 14.7% to 93,074 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n<p>The decline accelerated in August. Swedish deliveries fell 36.7% year on year to 50,043 m\u00b3 and Finnish shipments decreased 35.4% to 48,071 m\u00b3. Austria supplied 11,501 m\u00b3, down 28.9%.<\/p>\n<p>Canada was the largest supplier during August, shipping 53,191 m\u00b3, down 10.8%. The total includes all origins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Pine accounted for 971,234 m\u00b3 of imports during January\u2013August, followed by fir and spruce at 651,776 m\u00b3. Separately classified SPF shipments totalled 315,362 m\u00b3, while hem-fir and other softwood categories contributed 145,270 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n<p>The average softwood lumber import unit value was JPY 58,194\/m\u00b3 (approximately EUR 329\/m\u00b3) in August, almost unchanged from a year earlier. Swedish material averaged JPY 51,740\/m\u00b3 (EUR 292\/m\u00b3) and Finnish material JPY 51,339\/m\u00b3 (EUR 290\/m\u00b3). Canadian shipments averaged JPY 63,933\/m\u00b3 (EUR 361\/m\u00b3), while Austrian material averaged JPY 72,877\/m\u00b3 (EUR 412\/m\u00b3).<\/p>\n<p>These customs unit values reflect differences in species, dimensions, grades and processing, rather than prices for identical products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EU glued laminated wood deliveries decline, but Finland gains<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>European suppliers also faced lower Japanese purchases of glued laminated wood. EU deliveries fell 14% year on year to approximately 286,000 m\u00b3 during January\u2013August, accounting for 73% of Japan\u2019s imports in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Finland moved against that trend, increasing shipments by 2% to 151,000 m\u00b3. Austrian deliveries fell 32% to 38,000 m\u00b3, while Romanian shipments decreased 39% to 22,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s total glued laminated wood imports declined 8% to 394,000 m\u00b3. Structural glulam, included within that total, fell 12% to 316,000 m\u00b3. In August alone, EU glued laminated wood deliveries dropped 46% year on year to approximately 25,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plywood purchases rise as log imports contract<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Plywood imports increased 5% to approximately 1.020 million m\u00b3 during January\u2013August. Indonesia supplied 412,000 m\u00b3, up 7%, while Malaysia delivered 347,000 m\u00b3, down 12%. Vietnamese shipments rose 11% to 134,000 m\u00b3 and Chinese deliveries increased 72% to 105,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n<p>August plywood imports rose 20% year on year to approximately 133,000 m\u00b3.
