The difficulties facing Europe\u2019s wood industry extend to small and medium-sized businesses, where weak construction demand, high procurement costs and financing commitments leave less cash available to absorb losses. Alongside the closure announcements from large forest-products groups, regional sawmills, timber merchants and joinery manufacturers have entered insolvency and restructuring proceedings in recent months.<\/p>\n
GWMI has reviewed cases involving 19 businesses across 11 European countries between June and September 2026, ranging from hardwood sawmills in Germany and timber exporters in Austria to French mills placed in liquidation and merchants declared bankrupt in northern Europe. Among them are Austria\u2019s Schaffer, with 69 employees reported by KSV1870, and Huber-Fenster, with six: businesses of different sizes whose financial difficulties reach directly into local supply chains.<\/p>\n
For some, the immediate difficulty arose within the plant: an investment took longer than expected to deliver reliable production, or quality problems reduced the cash generated from sales. For others, losses accumulated over several years or a customer\u2019s insolvency left receivables unrecoverable. The result has been a mixture of businesses continuing under court protection, owners looking for investors and companies entering liquidation after earlier attempts to restructure.<\/p>\n
Sawmill cases in Germany and Austria; liquidations in France<\/strong><\/p>\n Germany\u2019s recent cases include S\u00e4gewerk M\u00fcnsterland, where the M\u00fcnster court appointed a provisional administrator and imposed protective measures on 22 September under case 72 IN 47\/26, and Laubholz-S\u00e4gewerk Blum, a hardwood sawmill in Waldkirch whose insolvency proceedings opened on 31 July on grounds of inability to pay. In Austria, Schaffer S\u00e4gewerk-Holzexport entered restructuring with self-administration on 31 August, with KSV1870 reporting 69 employees and approximately EUR 29.3 million in liabilities. Its proposed continuation involves finding an investor and temporarily reducing production from two shifts to one.<\/p>\n Several French sawmills have reached liquidation. SAJEB\u2019s judicial restructuring was converted to liquidation on 1 July, while Scierie Coop\u00e9rative de la Joux and Scierie Fialon Jacques were placed in judicial liquidation on 19 June and 21 July respectively. DETRAZ Jean-Fran\u00e7ois et Fils has been given more time: on 10 September, the Thonon-les-Bains commercial court extended its observation period to 27 March 2027 and authorised continued activity while the company prepares a recovery plan.<\/p>\n Selected cases, June\u2013September 2026. The table includes developments in existing proceedings.<\/p>\n Log costs, production losses and financing<\/strong><\/p>\n Schaffer\u2019s account illustrates how operational difficulties can become a financing problem in a weak market. According to the debtor\u2019s explanation published by KSV1870, commissioning a new production line proved more difficult than expected, with equipment availability and dimensional accuracy falling short for a period. Customer complaints followed, affecting commercial relationships just as the company was contending with difficult sales conditions and persistently high roundwood prices. Lenders ultimately called loans due, although AKV reported that the business still had a substantial order book when proceedings opened.<\/p>\n An order book offers limited protection when a mill cannot convert it into deliveries at the required quality and margin. Interruptions reduce throughput, while procurement commitments and equipment finance continue to absorb cash; customer claims can then reduce receipts from the material that has been sold. Reducing operating hours may contain further losses, but it also spreads fixed costs over fewer cubic metres and leaves less cash available to service debt. For a business carrying the cost of a recent investment, even a temporary production problem can therefore have consequences well beyond the commissioning period.<\/p>\n The market has offered little relief. The European Organisation of the Sawmill Industry reported in June that softwood lumber production in its member countries fell by 1.5% in 2025 and was expected to decline slightly again in 2026, citing weak European construction markets and pressure on raw material supply. In hardwoods, EOS reported long-standing log shortages alongside declining domestic consumption. Mills in that position have limited scope to recover procurement costs through higher lumber prices, while reducing log purchases does not remove the financing commitments already on their books.<\/p>\n Customer defaults and accumulated losses<\/strong><\/p>\n The difficulties also travel through customer accounts. Austria\u2019s Huber-Fenster entered bankruptcy proceedings on 8 September after, according to the debtor\u2019s explanation published by KSV1870, the insolvency of IPM Schober Fenster led to a write-off of approximately EUR 400,000. KSV reported liabilities of around EUR 1.014 million and said the business had already closed, while noting that the debtor\u2019s account had not yet been sufficiently checked. The case shows the scale of the exposure a single customer failure can create for a supplier whose own bills and financing commitments remain payable.<\/p>\n Elsewhere, the financial deterioration had been visible for longer. Danish timber merchant PrimaTr\u00e6 entered bankruptcy in September after recording losses and negative equity across three financial years. In Poland, credit bureau KRD reported in June that its wood-sector grouping, covering wood production and timber\/building-material wholesale, had PLN 216.3 million in overdue obligations across 4,192 businesses. Those arrears cover both producers and distributors, placing the financial pressure on more than one stage of the route from mill to customer.<\/p>\n Stock and receivables make this an expensive trade to finance when sales slow. Material has to be purchased, processed, stored and transported before the customer\u2019s payment is collected, while wages, energy bills and machinery instalments fall due on their own schedules. KRD\u2019s analysis identifies these demands on working capital alongside customer payment terms and financing commitments. A supplier may still be taking orders and issuing invoices while delayed collection leaves it short of the cash needed for the next log purchase or finance payment.<\/p>\n Business sales and continued production<\/strong><\/p>\n Some operating businesses have survived a change of ownership. HolzHaus Bonndorf filed for insolvency on 3 June, after which an investor process led to H\u00dcBSCHER HOLZBAU acquiring the business effective 1 September. IMAP, which advised on the transaction, reported that timber-building activity and contract production of components would continue. The sale preserved an operating site and its production capabilities even though the original company had entered insolvency.<\/p>\n Other companies are still working towards agreements that would allow them to continue. Schaffer is seeking an investor, DETRAZ has additional time to prepare a recovery plan, and Poland\u2019s Tartak Uszyce published an arrangement-date notice in June as part of an arrangement-approval restructuring procedure. SAJEB followed a different course, with its restructuring ending in liquidation and activity stopped.
