A GWMI investigation into birch veneer log prices and plywood production across Finland and the Baltic states shows a clear shift in the regional market. Premium birch logs are now reaching \u20ac160\u2013200\/m\u00b3, while plywood output and deliveries are rising at several major producers and new capacity is being added in Latvia and Estonia. The trend is developing against a changed trade backdrop, with Russian birch plywood excluded from the EU market and new anti-dumping measures affecting imports from China and Brazil.<\/p>\n

A Finnish forest owner has received an offer of more than \u20ac160\/m\u00b3 for specialty birch logs this autumn, a level far above ordinary birch log prices and close to the upper end of current Baltic veneer-log quotations.<\/p>\n

Harri V\u00e4lim\u00e4ki of the Forest Management Association North Karelia described \u20ac160\/m\u00b3 as exceptionally high, saying he had not recently seen comparable prices. Petri Takalo, CEO of the Forest Management Association P\u00e4ij\u00e4nne, said specialty birch generally finds buyers and that recent prices have been somewhat above \u20ac100\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Ordinary birch logs are trading at a very different level. Finnish industry purchasing data for late September put the four-week average standing price of birch logs at \u20ac60.32\/m\u00b3, compared with \u20ac83.00\/m\u00b3 for spruce and \u20ac77.01\/m\u00b3 for pine.<\/p>\n

The \u20ac160 offer therefore belongs to a narrow quality segment rather than indicating a comparable rise across the Finnish birch log market.<\/p>\n

Riga Wood Finland, which produces birch veneer at Sastamala, also reports continued good demand for birch logs. Forestry manager Timo Uotila said demand has remained strong since Russian birch log imports stopped, although the company does not see a physical shortage of raw material at present.<\/p>\n

Riga Wood does not buy a separate specialty grade. Instead, it pays one price for accepted birch logs, giving sellers a known price before harvesting rather than leaving the final value dependent on how much timber is classified into a premium assortment.<\/p>\n

Baltic veneer-log prices put Finland in regional context<\/h2>\n

The Finnish offer looks less exceptional when compared with current procurement prices across the Baltic region.<\/p>\n

In Estonia, Estonian Plywood's purchasing list effective from July 1, 2026 quotes A-grade birch veneer logs at \u20ac160\/m\u00b3 for 3.2-metre lengths and \u20ac170\/m\u00b3 for 4.8-metre logs in the 24\u201355 cm diameter range. ABC-grade material is quoted at \u20ac120\u2013130\/m\u00b3, while smaller dimensions fall to around \u20ac63\u2013115\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

That places the Finnish \u20ac160\/m\u00b3 specialty offer directly alongside published industrial buying prices in Estonia rather than outside the regional market.<\/p>\n

Latvia remains at the upper end. September market indications put A-grade birch veneer logs above 26 cm at as much as \u20ac180\u2013200\/m\u00b3, B-grade material above 26 cm at \u20ac125\u2013130\/m\u00b3, B-grade logs of 18\u201325 cm at \u20ac110\u2013115\/m\u00b3 and C-grade material at around \u20ac85\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Latvijas Finieris' purchasing list effective from August 26 quotes E-grade logs of 25 cm and above at \u20ac200\/m\u00b3 and 21\u201324.9 cm material at \u20ac180\/m\u00b3. B-grade prices range from \u20ac110\/m\u00b3 for 18\u201320.9 cm logs to \u20ac130\/m\u00b3 above 25 cm.<\/p>\n

The current Latvian level follows several years of very high veneer-log prices. Premium birch veneer logs were around \u20ac175\/m\u00b3 during parts of 2025 and returned towards \u20ac200\/m\u00b3 later in the year, after reaching approximately \u20ac232\/m\u00b3 during the exceptional market of 2022.<\/p>\n

Separate aggregated market data from Latvia also point to renewed upward movement. Me\u017eabir\u017ea data updated on October 2 showed a highest recorded birch veneer-log price of \u20ac114.8\/m\u00b3 and a 9.8% increase over the previous three months. The figure is not directly comparable with premium mill-yard procurement lists, but it supports the recent strengthening in the underlying birch market.<\/p>\n

In Lithuania, Latvijas Finieris subsidiary Likmere quotes A-grade birch logs at around \u20ac170\u2013180\/m\u00b3 depending on length, while larger B-grade logs are around \u20ac135\u2013145\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The comparison points to a distinct Nordic-Baltic premium birch market. Prices above \u20ac160\/m\u00b3 are not representative of ordinary birch sawlogs, but they are increasingly normal for the limited volumes that meet the diameter, straightness and quality requirements of veneer and plywood mills.<\/p>\n

European plywood producers gain room<\/h2>\n

The raw-material competition comes as the European birch plywood sector is operating in a markedly different trade environment from before 2022.<\/p>\n

GWMI previously reported that Russian plywood has effectively disappeared from EU and UK import flows, while EU+UK imports of Chinese temperate hardwood plywood fell 36% year-on-year to 405,400 m\u00b3 in the first half of 2026 following European anti-dumping measures.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Finnish plywood production increased 5.2% year-on-year in the first half. Koskisen reported good birch plywood demand and slightly higher selling prices in Q2, while machinery supplier Raute also pointed to firmer European hardwood plywood demand.<\/p>\n

For Finnish and Baltic birch plywood producers, the removal of Russian supply and restrictions affecting competing imports have improved the sales environment while concentrating procurement more heavily on Nordic and Baltic birch.<\/p>\n

The \u20ac160\/m\u00b3 Finnish specialty offer is therefore not an isolated curiosity. Published procurement prices already reach \u20ac160\u2013170\/m\u00b3 for A-grade veneer logs in Estonia, \u20ac170\u2013180\/m\u00b3 in Lithuania and as much as \u20ac180\u2013200\/m\u00b3 in Latvia.<\/p>\n

The more important market divide is no longer between Finland and the Baltics, but between ordinary birch logs and the much smaller pool of large, high-quality material sought by veneer and plywood mills.<\/p>\n

European birch plywood production strengthens<\/h2>\n

The stronger birch log market is being accompanied by higher plywood activity across northern Europe, with several producers reporting higher volumes, stronger deliveries or new capacity.<\/p>\n

Finland provides the clearest 2026 production signal. National plywood output increased 5.2% year-on-year in the first half of the year. At UPM Plywood, first-quarter deliveries increased to 131,000 m\u00b3 from 120,000 m\u00b3 a year earlier, a rise of just over 9%.<\/p>\n

UPM said the improvement in its plywood result came from higher deliveries and prices, while demand for birch plywood in panel trading and industrial applications remained good. Demand from LNG applications continued at a very high level. The business operates seven production units in Finland and Estonia with theoretical annual capacity of around 785,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Latvijas Finieris is also increasing production. The group's latest reported figures show plywood output rising from 333,000 m\u00b3 to 344,000 m\u00b3, while deliveries increased from 309,000 m\u00b3 to 316,000 m\u00b3. The company has simultaneously moved ahead with one of the largest capacity expansion programmes in the European birch plywood sector.<\/p>\n

At its Verems mill in Latvia, a \u20ac100 million expansion inaugurated in April 2026 is designed to raise annual plywood capacity from around 45,000 m\u00b3 to 85,000 m\u00b3. The company expects the project to generate more than \u20ac30 million in additional annual exports.<\/p>\n

The expansion is also significant for birch procurement. Latvijas Finieris has said that the higher Verems capacity will create additional demand for birch raw material, with part of the required veneer supplied from the group's Lithuanian operations.<\/p>\n

Estonia is moving in the same direction. Latvijas Finieris subsidiary Kohila Vineer has already exceeded the production capacity for which its existing plant was originally designed. A new expansion programme worth more than \u20ac70 million is now under way, with new plywood production lines scheduled to start operating in early 2028.<\/p>\n

Raute signed approximately \u20ac31 million of technology contracts with Kohila Vineer in September 2026 for the project, covering new and upgraded veneer and plywood production lines. The investment includes drying, grading, lay-up, pressing, repairing and overlaying equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The picture is not uniform across every producer, but the direction in the birch plywood segment is clear: output and deliveries are increasing at several major producers, while new capacity is being added in Latvia and Estonia.<\/p>\n

The shift comes against a substantially different trade backdrop. Russian birch plywood has been removed from the EU market by sanctions, while the EU has also imposed definitive anti-dumping duties on hardwood plywood from China. The duties, introduced in November 2025, range from 43.3% for one cooperating producer to 86.8% for other Chinese suppliers. In July 2026, the European Commission opened a further investigation into possible circumvention of those measures through slightly modified hardwood plywood.<\/p>\n

Competition from Brazil has also been affected. In April 2026, the EU imposed a definitive 5.4% anti-dumping duty on most Brazilian softwood plywood imports after concluding that dumped material was causing injury to European producers.<\/p>\n

Together, these measures have changed the competitive environment for European plywood mills. Domestic producers face less pressure from Russian birch plywood and from dumped Chinese and Brazilian imports, giving them more room to increase deliveries, raise utilisation and invest in additional capacity.<\/p>\n

That shift is also feeding back into raw-material procurement. With Finnish plywood output rising, UPM deliveries increasing and new capacity being added in Latvia and Estonia, competition for high-quality birch veneer logs is strengthening. Premium prices of \u20ac160\u2013200\/m\u00b3 across Finland and the Baltics are consistent with that tighter balance.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
