Hardwood suppliers are increasing preparations for the EU Deforestation Regulation ahead of its application from December 30, 2026, with geolocation data, due-diligence documentation and shipment-level traceability moving into day-to-day commercial systems.<\/p>\n

The regulation will require companies placing covered wood and wood products on the EU market, or exporting them from the bloc, to provide information showing that the material is legally produced and deforestation-free. Large and medium-sized operators will be covered from December 30, while most micro and small operators will follow from June 30, 2027.<\/p>\n

Recent EU simplification measures have changed parts of the compliance procedure, but the basic requirements on origin, legality and traceability remain.<\/p>\n

For hardwood suppliers, much of the work now concerns how data move with the product from the point of harvest through processing and delivery.<\/p>\n

Danzer adds geolocation data to shipment documentation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hardwood producer Danzer has been adapting its internal systems to include species, country of harvest, geolocation information and due-diligence reference numbers where required.<\/p>\n

The company says the information is being incorporated into its existing delivery documentation rather than handled as a separate compliance process.<\/p>\n

For shipments where customers need to make their own declaration, Danzer can provide geolocation files in GeoJSON format together with origin information and Due Diligence Statement reference numbers.<\/p>\n

The company has also been working with authorities, industry partners and customers on practical implementation of the regulation.<\/p>\n

<\/a>
Danzer processes hardwood and veneer for customers across international furniture and interior markets<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Danzer supplies hardwood and veneer to customers in more than 70 countries, including furniture and consumer-goods manufacturers that may themselves fall within the scope of the EUDR.<\/p>\n

For those customers, access to upstream origin data will be needed even where they are not directly involved in forest sourcing.<\/p>\n

US hardwood sector works on geolocation tools<\/strong><\/p>\n

The US hardwood industry faces a different traceability issue because its raw material comes from a large number of mostly private forest owners and fragmented harvesting operations.<\/p>\n

The American Hardwood Export Council has been adapting its American Hardwood Environmental Profile system to provide data that can be used by exporters and European importers under the EUDR.<\/p>\n

The system combines US Forest Service information, satellite mapping and geolocation data to identify potential harvesting areas and produce information linked to individual consignments.<\/p>\n

AHEC has also worked on output compatible with EU systems, including GeoJSON files containing geographic information.<\/p>\n

One of the main practical problems is the number of possible forest parcels behind a single shipment. A container of US hardwood can include timber originating from many different harvesting sites, making data collection more complex than in supply chains based on large industrial forest holdings.<\/p>\n

AHEC has been using publicly available forest inventory and satellite data to narrow those locations and provide exporters with geolocation information without requiring individual small forest owners to operate their own EUDR systems.<\/p>\n

US forest data used for risk screening<\/strong><\/p>\n

AHEC has also carried out deforestation-risk analysis across the main US hardwood-producing regions.<\/p>\n

An assessment covering 2,615 counties in 37 states classified the overwhelming majority as presenting negligible deforestation risk, with only a small number falling into higher risk categories under the methodology used.<\/p>\n

The system has been designed to work at a finer satellite resolution than the minimum required under the regulation.<\/p>\n

For exporters, the practical objective is to connect the physical shipment with information on species, origin and harvesting location in a format that European customers can use in their own due-diligence process.<\/p>\n

December deadline moves closer<\/strong><\/p>\n

Companies are now testing how those data will move through existing commercial systems rather than treating EUDR compliance as a stand-alone exercise.<\/p>\n

For suppliers such as Danzer, that means adding geolocation and due-diligence references to normal shipment documentation. For US exporters, the focus is on linking material from a fragmented forest base to usable geographic data.<\/p>\n

The regulation is due to apply to large and medium operators from December 30, 2026, with smaller operators following in June 2027.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
