Swedish softwood lumber prices moved lower again in August, reversing part of the recovery recorded during the spring, new producer price data show.<\/p>\n

The producer price index for softwood lumber and planed wood products fell by 2.4 points from July, according to Statistics Sweden data. Compared with August 2025, the decline was roughly twice as large.<\/p>\n

The latest decrease leaves Swedish lumber prices well below the peak reached in June 2025, when the index stood at 157.1. It subsequently fell to 156.1 in July and 154.4 in August before continuing lower during the second half of the year.<\/p>\n

By December 2025, the index had declined to 147.7. The downturn continued at the start of 2026, with the index falling to 146.0 in January and 145.2 in February.<\/p>\n

Prices began to recover in March after eight consecutive monthly declines and continued upward in April. The latest figures indicate that this recovery lost momentum during the summer.<\/p>\n

The August decline comes as Swedish sawmills are also seeing some easing in raw material costs.<\/p>\n

Average pine sawlog prices for harvesting assignments fell 12% quarter on quarter to 855 SEK\/m\u00b3sub (\u20ac75.5\/m\u00b3sub) in the second quarter of 2026, while spruce sawlogs declined 9% to 1,059 SEK\/m\u00b3sub (\u20ac93.5\/m\u00b3sub), Swedish Forest Agency data show.<\/p>\n

Despite the decreases, sawlog prices remain high compared with levels seen before the sharp increases of recent years, while the finished lumber price index has moved down from its 2025 peak.<\/p>\n

Sweden's lumber price index had fallen to around 124 at the end of 2023 before climbing through much of 2024 and the first half of 2025.<\/p>\n

The June 2025 peak of 157.1 represented an increase of more than 30 points in roughly eighteen months.<\/p>\n

The August decline therefore extends the correction from last year's high, although Swedish softwood lumber prices remain considerably above the levels recorded before the latest price cycle.<\/p>\n
