Palantir CEO and co-founder Alex Karp has acquired around 15,000 hectares of forest and mountain land in central Sweden from forest group SCA, in one of the more unusual large private forest transactions reported in the country this year.<\/p>\n
The property, located around Storsj\u00f6 Kapell in H\u00e4rjedalen and Berg municipalities, was bought through the newly established Swedish company Cladonia Skog AB, where Karp is the beneficial owner.<\/p>\n
The purchase price has been reported at SEK 235 million, equivalent to about \u20ac20.7 million.<\/p>\n
The transaction covers a large contiguous holding close to the Scandinavian mountain range. More recent reporting puts the exact area at around 14,500 hectares, although most initial reports rounded the transaction to 15,000 hectares.<\/p>\n
SCA said the land was sold because it was not considered optimal for the company's forestry operations. Large parts of the property consist of mountain and mountain-adjacent terrain rather than highly productive commercial forest. SCA has described much of the area as open mountain land.<\/p>\n
The relatively low price per hectare therefore does not compare directly with transactions involving productive forest land elsewhere in Sweden.<\/p>\n
At SEK 235 million for approximately 15,000 hectares, the transaction corresponds to roughly SEK 15,700\/ha, or about \u20ac1,380\/ha.<\/p>\n
For comparison, Swedish forest transactions can command significantly higher prices where timber production potential is stronger.<\/p>\n
Data center speculation rejected<\/strong><\/p>\n The buyer's identity quickly triggered speculation over whether the acquisition could eventually be connected with data center development.<\/p>\n Karp is CEO of Palantir Technologies, the US software group whose platforms are used for large-scale data analysis by governments, defence organisations, police authorities and companies.<\/p>\n Rapid investment in artificial intelligence has at the same time driven a wave of data center construction internationally, increasing demand for land, electricity and grid connections.<\/p>\n Some residents in the area raised concerns that part of the newly acquired land could eventually be used for computing infrastructure.<\/p>\n Cladonia Skog has rejected that interpretation. The company said the property is intended to be managed over the long term as forest land and described speculation about data centers on the site as unfounded. It said the owner's intention is to manage the area carefully while respecting its natural environment and local traditions connected with forestry, hunting and skiing.<\/p>\n There are also practical constraints on alternative development. The property includes large areas close to the mountains, and changing land use from forestry to major industrial development would require a complex planning and permitting process.<\/p>\n Forest management remains the stated purpose<\/strong><\/p>\n Company documents indicate that Cladonia Skog was established to own and manage forest property and conduct forestry and related activities.<\/p>\n The transaction also transfers hunting rights associated with the land. Several local hunting arrangements have already been affected following the sale, according to Swedish regional reporting.<\/p>\n Representatives of the new owner have described the holding as a long-term land investment rather than an industrial development site.<\/p>\n The acquisition is unusual less because of its value than because of the profile of the buyer. Karp has become one of the most prominent figures in the global technology sector as Palantir's business has expanded rapidly alongside growing investment in artificial intelligence, defence technology and government data systems.<\/p>\n His move into Swedish forest ownership places a significant block of northern land in the hands of a private investor whose main business interests are far removed from conventional forestry.<\/p>\n SCA trims remote forest holdings<\/strong><\/p>\n For SCA, the sale fits a more conventional forestry rationale.
