Stora Enso is planning to close its cross-laminated timber production at Gruv\u00f6n in Sweden and concentrate the site on sawn and further-processed wood products.<\/p>\n
The company said on September 29 that it will begin change negotiations with employees at Gruv\u00f6n sawmill over the proposed restructuring. If implemented, CLT production would end permanently by the close of 2026.<\/p>\n
The negotiations cover around 220 employees at the site, including the Nordic CLT sales organisation. Stora Enso said up to 80 positions could be affected. No final decision will be taken until the negotiations have been completed.<\/p>\n
The company linked the proposed closure to weaker-than-expected development in the CLT market over recent years. Rising wood costs and the relatively high fixed costs of CLT production have added further pressure on profitability.<\/p>\n
Jonas Lindqvist, Head of Business Unit Skoghall at Stora Enso, said the outlook for achieving sustainable profitability at Gruv\u00f6n had become too limited under current market conditions.<\/p>\n
The planned restructuring would allow Stora Enso to put greater emphasis on the site's sawn and planed timber operations, which the company intends to continue developing.<\/p>\n
Gruv\u00f6n currently produces sawn timber, processed timber, pellets and made-to-order construction products. Sawn timber deliveries will continue as normal during the process.<\/p>\n
Stora Enso said the proposed closure would not change Business Unit Skoghall's wood consumption.<\/p>\n
The company would also remain active in CLT production for Nordic customers through its three other production units: \u017dd\u00edrec in the Czech Republic and Ybbs and Bad St. Leonhard in Austria.<\/p>\n
