Uruguayan forest products company LUMIN is moving closer to completing its third plywood mill, an investment that will lift its total annual plywood production capacity to nearly half a million cubic metres.<\/p>\n

The new plant is being built near Melo, in the Cerro Largo department, around 12 km south of the city along Route 8. It will have annual production capacity of 164,000 m\u00b3 of plywood and become LUMIN\u2019s third industrial mill in Uruguay.<\/p>\n

In its latest project update, LUMIN said construction is advancing both inside and outside the site. Work on the new access roundabout is continuing, while activity inside the plant is increasingly focused on the production process, from the arrival of logs through the different stages of plywood manufacturing.<\/p>\n

The Melo mill represents an investment of around US$136 million, based on LUMIN\u2019s English-language project information. The company\u2019s current Spanish-language project page puts the investment at US$140 million.<\/p>\n

Plywood capacity to approach 500,000 m\u00b3<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 164,000 m\u00b3\/year Melo plant will substantially increase LUMIN\u2019s existing plywood capacity and take the company\u2019s total annual production to nearly 500,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

LUMIN currently produces plywood and veneer at its industrial complex in Tacuaremb\u00f3. The company entered industrial production there in 2006 and has subsequently expanded the site through additional investments in processing capacity, warehousing and thin-peel production.<\/p>\n

Once Melo is fully operational, LUMIN will operate three plywood mills in Uruguay and have close to half a million cubic metres of annual plywood capacity. The company says the expansion will also reinforce Uruguay\u2019s position as the second-largest plywood producer in Latin America.<\/p>\n

LUMIN\u2019s plywood is based primarily on eucalyptus and is supplied to international markets for uses including construction and furniture manufacturing. The company operates an integrated model covering nurseries, forests, industrial production, logistics and marketing.<\/p>\n

Melo plant tied to mature eucalyptus plantations<\/strong><\/p>\n

The location in Cerro Largo is closely linked to LUMIN\u2019s forest resource in northeastern Uruguay. Plantations established in the region in 2006 and 2007 have now reached industrial maturity, providing the raw material base for the new mill.<\/p>\n

Locating production closer to these plantations will reduce log transport distances and allow LUMIN to process more timber near the source rather than moving it to its existing facilities in Tacuaremb\u00f3.<\/p>\n

LUMIN manages about 128,000 hectares of timberland in Uruguay, including around 67,000 hectares of planted forests across Rivera, Tacuaremb\u00f3, Cerro Largo and Treinta y Tres. The company also operates a eucalyptus nursery and biomass-based cogeneration facilities.<\/p>\n

More than 300 permanent jobs<\/p>\n

The Melo plant is expected to generate more than 300 permanent jobs. Earlier company project information specified around 320 new positions linked to the investment.<\/p>\n

Construction work also generated several hundred temporary jobs. LUMIN reported that machinery foundations, mechanical assembly and medium-voltage electrical installation had already reached an advanced stage during 2025.<\/p>\n

The company continues to indicate 2026 as the start-up year. Its latest update, however, shows that construction, infrastructure works and production-line preparation are still progressing. No revised commercial start date has been announced.<\/p>\n

LUMIN describes itself as a Uruguayan forest products company, although it is owned by a consortium of long-term institutional investors including BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation. The investor consortium acquired Weyerhaeuser\u2019s Uruguayan forest assets and plywood manufacturing business in 2017.<\/p>\n
