Sweden\u2019s sawmill sector is going through one of its sharpest restructuring phases in years, with several mills closed or earmarked for closure and other plants running at sharply reduced levels.<\/p>\n

The pressure is coming from both sides of the margin. Swedish sawlog prices remain historically high, while demand and prices for softwood lumber have failed to recover enough to compensate. In southern Sweden in particular, sawmill capacity continues to exceed the available raw material base.<\/p>\n

Christian Nielsen, market analyst for the sawmill sector at the Swedish Forest Industries Federation, Skogsindustrierna, told Finnish newspaper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus that the current raw material situation is accelerating a structural change that was already under way in the Swedish sawmill industry.<\/p>\n

A succession of closures and production cuts during 2025 and 2026 now shows how quickly that restructuring is moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Sawlog costs remain the central problem<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nielsen sees raw material costs as one of the main reasons the pressure has become so severe.<\/p>\n

Swedish sawlog prices are now more than twice their pre-pandemic level, while the softwood lumber market has weakened both in terms of demand and selling prices. The imbalance has left many sawmills operating with significantly compressed margins, and in some cases with losses for an extended period.<\/p>\n

Companies initially tolerated that pressure in the expectation that lumber demand and prices would recover. That recovery has remained too weak, however, making it increasingly difficult to justify maintaining uneconomic production capacity.<\/p>\n

The result is that decisions which might previously have been postponed are now being taken more quickly.<\/p>\n

Southern Sweden faces the hardest raw material balance<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pressure is not uniform across Sweden. Southern Sweden has a particularly dense sawmill structure, while access to additional timber is limited. This is the imbalance cited directly by Vida when it announced the closure of Urshult and Orrefors.<\/p>\n

The species mix has also changed. Heavy spruce harvesting following bark beetle damage from 2018 onwards was followed by a greater harvesting focus on pine. Storm damage has further increased pine availability in some regions.<\/p>\n

At the same time, sawmills continue to show stronger demand for spruce in several product segments. This has created a situation in which timber may be available, but not necessarily in the species and assortments mills need most.<\/p>\n

Nielsen says the raw material squeeze is strongest in southern Sweden and gradually eases further north.<\/p>\n

Capacity is shifting rather than simply disappearing<\/strong><\/p>\n

The growing list of closures gives the impression of a rapidly shrinking Swedish sawmill industry, but the capacity picture is more complex.<\/p>\n

Swedish producers invested heavily during and after the pandemic, expanding or modernising larger production sites. The current downturn is therefore pushing companies to concentrate output in those mills while withdrawing from smaller, older or less strategically placed facilities.<\/p>\n

Independent senior adviser Johan Freij said in an interview to the Swedish media that many of the current problems can be traced back to the investment cycle of the pandemic years. Strong earnings encouraged major capacity additions, but much of that new capacity reached the market just as softwood lumber prices fell and construction weakened internationally.<\/p>\n

Freij also points to a pattern already visible in recent closures. When production disappears at one site, available timber volumes are often redirected to more efficient lines elsewhere within the same group. Historically, sawmills that close in Sweden have rarely restarted, while modern equipment may instead be sold abroad because highly customised production lines can be difficult to integrate at other Swedish plants.<\/p>\n

Bergkvist Siljan\u2019s Mora decision is a clear example. Production was stopped in Mora, but part of the volume was transferred to Insj\u00f6n and Blyberg rather than disappearing from the group altogether.<\/p>\n

Vida is following a similar strategy. The closure of Urshult and Orrefors reduces nominal capacity, but the company intends to continue investing in its remaining sawmills, concentrating production in fewer and more specialised units.<\/p>\n

This means Sweden may end up with fewer mills without seeing an equally large fall in total national production capacity.<\/p>\n

Weak lumber markets prolong the adjustment<\/strong><\/p>\n

The restructuring would be less severe if softwood lumber markets were stronger. Construction activity remains weak across Sweden and much of Europe, limiting demand and preventing lumber prices from rising enough to compensate for elevated sawlog costs.<\/p>\n

Freij also points to weakness outside Europe. High interest rates have kept US construction activity under pressure, while instability in the Middle East has weakened an important source of demand for Swedish pine. This has left spruce, whose markets are more heavily concentrated in Europe, carrying a larger share of the export burden.<\/p>\n

Swedish sawmills are heavily dependent on exports, with roughly 75\u201380% of production sold abroad. This makes the industry particularly sensitive to changes in European construction activity, overseas demand and exchange rates.<\/p>\n

A weak Swedish krona supported exporters for several years, but the currency strengthened substantially during 2025, reducing part of that competitive advantage. The krona has weakened again in recent months, offering some relief, but not enough to offset the raw material problem.<\/p>\n

Finland has so far avoided Sweden\u2019s closure wave<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finland is facing many of the same pressures as Sweden, but the adjustment has so far been less severe.<\/p>\n

Sawlog prices are also historically high in Finland, and sawmills are operating in a weak softwood lumber market. However, the country has not yet seen the same concentration of mill closures that has emerged in Sweden during 2026.<\/p>\n

Nielsen told Maaseudun Tulevaisuus that the Finnish raw material market has not tightened to the same degree as in Sweden.<\/p>\n

One reason is that Finland entered the post-pandemic investment cycle with more unused harvesting potential. New sawmill capacity has absorbed part of that resource, but the balance between available sawlogs and industrial demand has remained somewhat less strained than in southern Sweden.<\/p>\n

The pressure in Finland has instead been particularly visible in pulpwood markets, where competition for raw material has also intensified. This can still affect sawmills indirectly because the economics of harvesting depend on the full mix of sawlogs and pulpwood removed from forests.<\/p>\n

The planned closure of Stora Enso\u2019s Veitsiluoto sawmill is therefore not seen as a direct parallel to the Swedish closure wave. Nielsen treats Veitsiluoto more as a company-specific adjustment linked to Stora Enso\u2019s own wood supply balance than as evidence of a wider deterioration across the Finnish sawmill sector.<\/p>\n

Even so, the gap between Finland and Sweden should not be overstated. Both markets are exposed to the same basic problem: high raw material costs and softwood lumber prices that remain too weak to restore comfortable margins.<\/p>\n

For Finland, the key question is whether sawlog supply tightens further as new capacity absorbs more timber. If that happens while lumber demand remains weak, the pressure now visible in Sweden could gradually become more pronounced on the Finnish side as well.<\/p>\n

More restructuring remains possible<\/strong><\/p>\n

The restructuring is unlikely to be over.<\/p>\n

Nielsen sees the Swedish sawmill industry as being in a structural transition rather than facing only a short cyclical downturn.<\/p>\n

Freij goes further. In his interview with Skogen, he said more sawmill lines are likely to be closed as weak lumber markets, high timber costs and excess capacity continue to weigh on profitability.<\/p>\n

His main concern is no longer only the disappearance of older and less efficient production lines. Freij warns that well-invested mills could also come under pressure, particularly where large capacity expansions were financed with debt and higher interest rates are now increasing capital costs.<\/p>\n

That would represent a more serious stage of the adjustment. The Swedish and wider Nordic sawmill industry contains a large amount of modern capacity installed or upgraded over the past several years, and pressure on recently invested mills would go beyond the normal removal of older production during a downturn.<\/p>\n

The domestic Swedish market may offer some support, while Freij also sees scope for a recovery in Central Europe. The difficulty is that a large share of Swedish production is exported, leaving producers exposed to weak construction markets abroad, including the UK.<\/p>\n

The key question is therefore not simply how many mills close, but where production ultimately settles and how much capacity is transferred to larger plants.<\/p>\n

For the market to return to a more sustainable balance, either sawlog prices need to fall or softwood lumber prices need to rise enough to restore margins.<\/p>\n

Until one of those adjustments occurs, Sweden\u2019s sawmill restructuring is likely to continue along the same lines: closure of weaker sites, transfer of volumes to larger units and continued competition for a constrained raw material base.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
