Canada is pressing the European Union to simplify EUDR compliance for timber and other products coming from countries classified as low risk.<\/p>\n
Canada is currently in the EU\u2019s low-risk category, but Ottawa argues that companies sourcing from countries with established forest governance should face fewer administrative requirements than those dealing with higher-risk origins.<\/p>\n
The subject has been raised in EU-Canada trade discussions, with Canada pushing for a lighter approach to traceability and documentation where the risk of deforestation is already considered low.<\/p>\n
For the forest sector, the main concern is the amount of paperwork exporters will have to provide once the regulation applies. Canadian companies selling lumber, panels, pulp, paper and other wood products into the EU will still have to meet the EUDR requirements on legality and deforestation-free sourcing.<\/p>\n
The EU has already introduced a number of changes to reduce the administrative burden, including simplified procedures for some smaller operators and adjustments to the information system used for due diligence declarations.<\/p>\n
Even so, Canada wants a clearer difference between low-risk and higher-risk countries in day-to-day compliance.<\/p>\n
Canadian exporters are particularly concerned about detailed traceability requirements for timber that already comes from regulated forest systems and established supply chains. The Canadian position is that low-risk classification should lead to less duplication and fewer reporting steps.<\/p>\n
The timing is becoming more pressing as the EUDR application date approaches. Large and medium-sized operators are due to comply from the end of December 2026, while smaller companies will follow later.<\/p>\n
