S\u00f6dra is offering a temporary premium this autumn, a targeted move after three rounds of wood price reductions across southern Sweden earlier this year.<\/p>\n

From September 22, the forest owners' group is paying an additional SEK 50\/m\u00b3 (about \u20ac4.4\/m\u00b3) for hardwood pulpwood and sawable birch. The premium applies to new thinning contracts and delivery wood agreements signed between September 22 and November 30, with deliveries accepted through December.<\/p>\n

S\u00f6dra says it needs more birch pulpwood for its industries through the end of the year, while business for pulp produced from birch has increased. The company is also selling larger volumes of birch sawlogs, including to plywood producers in the Baltic countries.<\/p>\n

\n

\"We have a short-term need for birch pulpwood for the industry until the end of the year,\" S\u00f6dra marketing director Markus Springfeldt said. He also pointed to greater potential for birch sawlogs, with growing volumes currently being sold to Baltic plywood production.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The September premium stands out after a year in which S\u00f6dra has repeatedly reduced its base wood prices.<\/p>\n

The first cuts came on February 3, when weaker sawlog demand coincided with relatively high supplies of pulpwood and energy assortments. Spruce sawlogs were reduced by SEK 50\/m\u00b3 (about \u20ac4.4\/m\u00b3), pine sawlogs by SEK 100\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac8.9\/m\u00b3), and small-diameter spruce and pine by SEK 75\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac6.6\/m\u00b3). Softwood and hardwood pulpwood were both cut by SEK 30\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac2.7\/m\u00b3).<\/p>\n

A second adjustment followed on March 20. S\u00f6dra lowered both spruce and pine sawlogs by another SEK 100\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac8.9\/m\u00b3), with the same reduction applied to small-diameter timber. Softwood and hardwood pulpwood were cut by a further SEK 25\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac2.2\/m\u00b3). The company said sawlog demand remained subdued, while pulpwood supply was still relatively high.<\/p>\n

Prices moved down again from June 18. Following storms Johannes and Dave, S\u00f6dra reported increased raw-material availability, particularly for pine. Normal pine sawlogs were cut by SEK 100\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac8.9\/m\u00b3), small-diameter pine by SEK 50\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac4.4\/m\u00b3) and normal spruce sawlogs by SEK 50\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac4.4\/m\u00b3). Softwood and hardwood pulpwood were each reduced by another SEK 25\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac2.2\/m\u00b3).<\/p>\n

The June adjustment was not uniform across S\u00f6dra's procurement area. At the same time as lowering the spruce base price, the group introduced a SEK 50\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac4.4\/m\u00b3) market premium for normal spruce sawlogs in southern parts of its region, where the market had developed differently.<\/p>\n

For hardwood pulpwood, the three reductions between February and June add up to SEK 80\/m\u00b3, or around \u20ac7.1\/m\u00b3. The new SEK 50\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac4.4\/m\u00b3) autumn premium therefore recovers part of that decline for qualifying contracts, but it is temporary rather than a change in the base price.<\/p>\n

Birch has also developed differently from the main softwood assortments. S\u00f6dra was already reporting stronger interest in birch sawlogs in March, both in Sweden and abroad. The company said plywood manufacturers were among the main buyers and linked the change partly to the loss of Russian and Belarusian supply, which has pushed European users to look for alternative sources of birch. Smaller sawmills in southern Sweden were also supplying customers in the British and Polish furniture industries.<\/p>\n

The September decision therefore comes against a mixed raw-material market. S\u00f6dra has spent much of 2026 lowering prices for pine, spruce and pulpwood, but its immediate requirement for birch has moved in the opposite direction. For now, the higher payment is limited to hardwood pulpwood and sawable birch and applies only to contracts concluded during the autumn window.<\/p>\n
