GWMI's reading of current freight benchmarks shows a widening gap between major trade corridors.

The sharpest distortion is on the trans-Pacific. Xeneta's Far East–US East Coast spot rate reached USD 11,259 per FEU on September 17, almost 325% above its late-February level and only 11% below the pandemic-era record. The corresponding West Coast rate stood at USD 7,960.

Europe occupies a very different position. Far East–North Europe was quoted at USD 4,103 per FEU and Far East–Mediterranean at USD 4,434, while North Europe–US East Coast stood at USD 2,956. Rates out of Europe differ sharply depending on direction and destination, and the imbalance is particularly visible on Europe–Asia and transatlantic routes.

Drewry's World Container Index put Rotterdam–New York at USD 3,121 per 40-foot container on September 17. The opposite New York–Rotterdam route cost just USD 1,122. On the Asia corridor, the imbalance is even larger: Rotterdam–Shanghai stood at only USD 604, compared with USD 3,626 from Shanghai to Rotterdam.

For European wood exporters, the cheap eastbound backhaul to Asia is commercially relevant. European hardwood lumber, specialised softwood lumber, veneer, machinery and other containerised products can benefit from the structural imbalance in container flows. A WCI benchmark is not a timber-specific quotation and actual rates depend on weight, carrier, port charges, equipment and surcharges, but the direction of the market is clear.

The transatlantic route is different. Europe-to-US freight is considerably more expensive than the return leg, but it remains far below current trans-Pacific levels. A European supplier shipping from Rotterdam to New York faces a benchmark around USD 3,100 per FEU, against more than USD 10,000 for a comparable container originating in Shanghai.

Europe-facing container routes

Route

Sept. 17 rate

Weekly move

Rotterdam → New York

USD 3,121

0%

New York → Rotterdam

USD 1,122

−1%

Rotterdam → Shanghai

USD 604

+1%

Shanghai → Rotterdam

USD 3,626

−9%

Shanghai → Genoa

USD 4,016

−5%

Source: Drewry World Container Index. Asian freight into Europe is currently easing: Shanghai–Rotterdam dropped 9% in the week to September 17 and Shanghai–Genoa fell 5%. Drewry attributes the pressure partly to weaker demand and the gradual restoration of services through the Suez Canal.

European exporters do not receive the same relief westbound. The Rotterdam–New York rate remains above USD 3,100 and is nearly three times the eastbound New York–Rotterdam rate. For containerised European wood products sold into the US, however, the important comparison is often not with the return route but with competing supply from Asia. On that basis Europe currently retains a substantial freight advantage.

Diesel changes the European comparison

European ocean freight cannot be separated from inland logistics. The EU weighted average diesel price had reached EUR 2.04/litre by the end of August, up from EUR 1.52 at the end of 2025.

The differences between major wood-producing countries were substantial. Finland stood at EUR 2.33/litre, Germany at EUR 2.23 and France at EUR 2.21. Sweden was at EUR 1.73 and Poland at EUR 1.67.

A Finnish mill was therefore buying diesel around EUR 0.60/litre above a Swedish competitor, while the German–Polish difference was roughly EUR 0.56/litre. Those gaps become significant where sawlog procurement radii are large or finished products travel several hundred kilometres before reaching a customer, port or intermodal terminal.

European diesel cost comparison

Country

Diesel, end-August

Change vs end-2025

Finlanda

EUR 2.33/l

+30.2%

Germania

EUR 2.23/l

+40.1%

Franța

EUR 2.21/l

+41.6%

Austria

EUR 1.99/l

+33.6%

Sweden

EUR 1.73/l

+18.1%

Poland

EUR 1.67/l

+17.1%

Source: European fuel-price data. Two Nordic mills quoting the same FOB price can arrive at the port with materially different sawlog and inland transport costs.

North America combines extreme ocean freight with a diesel shock

The US market presents a different cost structure. Asian wood products arriving by container face the highest ocean freight rates among the major routes, while domestically produced US wood avoids that ocean cost. That cost applies before wages, equipment, maintenance, insurance and other trucking expenses.

The result is a three-way split. Asian suppliers face exceptionally expensive ocean freight into the US. US mills avoid ocean freight in their domestic market but carry much higher harvesting and trucking costs. European exporters also face expensive inland fuel at origin, but container freight across the Atlantic remains dramatically cheaper than freight from Asia.

The US East Coast is therefore particularly interesting for European suppliers of containerised processed wood products. The ocean freight differential is currently large enough to absorb part of Europe's higher inland logistics cost before the shipment even reaches the American port.

Gulf freight remains heavily distorted

The Gulf is another corridor where transport costs have moved far beyond a marginal expense.

Xeneta put China–Jeddah at USD 10,870 per FEU on September 10 and China–Khor al Fakkan at USD 10,626. Port congestion, bunker costs, rerouting and reduced vessel availability nevertheless feed into the wider delivered-cost calculation.

Saudi Arabia remains large enough to absorb meaningful European volumes, while the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait have become more difficult destinations commercially and logistically.

Freight arbitrage is back

The strongest signal for traders is no longer the absolute level of freight but the widening spread between competing routes.

A European container into New York costs around USD 3,000. An Asian container entering the same coast costs more than USD 11,000 on Xeneta's benchmark. Europe-to-Asia backhaul freight can be below USD 1,000, while the same box moving in the opposite direction costs several times more.

At the same time, inland fuel costs have moved sharply higher on both sides of the Atlantic. Sweden retains a sizeable diesel advantage over Finland, Poland over Germany, while US diesel has almost doubled in some regions since the end of 2025.

These differences are unlikely to redirect entire trade flows at once. The first changes are more likely to appear in marginal business: a buyer shifting part of an order from Asia to Europe, a European mill finding the US more attractive than another overseas market, a US buyer shortening its domestic trucking radius, or an exporter changing ports because the logistics spread has become larger than the difference in product price.

Container rates may soften after China's Golden Week as additional capacity enters the market and seasonal pressure eases. Diesel could remain expensive for longer.

For Q4, wood-product trade is increasingly being priced through the full delivered-cost chain rather than the mill price alone.
