Europe\u2019s hardwood industry is stepping up pressure on policymakers to address a problem that has been building for years: the continent has substantial hardwood resources, but its sawmills increasingly have to compete for those logs while carrying production costs that are difficult to match internationally.<\/p>\n
The issue was brought directly to European Parliament member Martin H\u00e4usling during a visit to ABALON HARDWOOD\u2019s sawmill in Schwalmstadt, Germany, where representatives of the company, the European Organisation of the Sawmill Industry (EOS) and Germany\u2019s sawmill association DeSH discussed raw material availability, industrial competitiveness and the future of hardwood processing in Europe.<\/p>\n
The discussion comes at a difficult point for the sector. Hardwood sawmills face weak demand in several traditional European end-use markets while electricity, labour and regulatory costs remain high. At the same time, European logs continue to attract buyers outside the EU, leaving processors to compete not only with neighbouring mills but with export demand for the same raw material.<\/p>\n
For hardwood producers, the argument is increasingly about where the value of a European tree is ultimately created. Logs shipped abroad leave Europe before sawing, drying, grading and further processing take place. Industry representatives argue that a larger share of that transformation could remain within the EU, supporting sawmills and downstream manufacturers in furniture, flooring, interiors and other wood-processing sectors. DeSH and EOS presented that position during the Schwalmstadt meeting as a question of industrial competitiveness rather than simply forest supply.<\/p>\n
ABALON is particularly exposed to the economics of European beech. The company specialises in beech lumber and operates mills in Schwalmstadt and Heiligenkreuz, Austria, supplying industrial and distribution customers internationally. Its product range includes edged, steamed and kiln-dried beech lumber as well as products prepared for further industrial processing.<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s representatives used the visit to argue that Europe already possesses both the forest resource and the technology required to build more value around hardwood domestically. Their concern is that investment becomes harder to justify when processors face rising costs while raw material is increasingly contested by buyers able to move logs directly into non-EU supply chains.<\/p>\n
That tension is especially relevant for beech. Unlike the European softwood sector, where large-volume construction markets dominate much of the discussion, hardwood processors depend on a more fragmented mix of furniture, flooring, interior products and specialist industrial applications. This makes utilisation rates and raw-material purchasing particularly sensitive when downstream demand weakens.<\/p>\n
EOS also pointed to the closure of processing capacity in recent years as a reason for policymakers to pay closer attention to the economics of hardwood manufacturing. The organisation\u2019s position is that new regulatory costs should be considered alongside the sector\u2019s ability to invest in modern processing equipment and make efficient use of available logs.<\/p>\n
The Schwalmstadt discussions therefore went beyond the immediate situation of one mill. They touched on a wider question now facing Europe\u2019s forest-based industries: whether policies designed around forests, climate and the bioeconomy are sufficiently aligned with the economics of actually processing wood inside Europe.<\/p>\n
For sawmills, access to logs is only one part of that equation. Energy, labour, investment costs, environmental rules and access to export markets ultimately determine whether a European log can be transformed competitively before it leaves the continent.<\/p>\n
The industry groups meeting H\u00e4usling called for future EU rules to give greater consideration to domestic processing and investment. H\u00e4usling toured ABALON\u2019s production facilities during the visit and was shown the steps involved in converting European hardwood logs into higher-value products.<\/p>\n
The debate is unlikely to disappear quickly. European forests contain large hardwood resources, while changing forest composition could make hardwood increasingly important in future timber supply. For the processing sector, the commercial question is whether enough competitive industrial capacity will remain in Europe to turn those resources into finished and semi-finished products rather than exporting a growing share of the value chain with the logs.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
