EU softwood lumber exports to the Middle East and North Africa fell to 4.38 million m\u00b3 in the first seven months of 2026, down 13.8% from the same period last year. Export value declined 14.1% to EUR 1.00 billion, with sharp losses in Saudi Arabia, Morocco and several Gulf markets offset partly by higher shipments to Egypt and Algeria.<\/p>\n

The decline removed around 701,000 m\u00b3 from EU exports to the region between January and July. The average customs value changed very little, slipping from EUR 229.9\/m\u00b3 to EUR 229.0\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

The loss was heavily concentrated. Saudi Arabia bought almost 168,000 m\u00b3 less than a year earlier, Morocco around 180,000 m\u00b3 less and the United Arab Emirates more than 212,000 m\u00b3 less. Those three markets alone accounted for roughly 80% of the reduction in EU shipments to MENA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The seven-month figure masks some improvement as the year progressed. The heaviest losses came early in 2026, particularly in February and March. By July, EU shipments to MENA had recovered to around 750,400 m\u00b3, only 0.8% below July 2025. That did little to repair the cumulative decline, but it left trade at the end of the period much closer to last year's monthly level than the January-July comparison alone would indicate.<\/p>\n

Egypt takes a larger share<\/strong><\/p>\n

Egypt moved further ahead of the rest of the region, increasing its purchases from the EU by 5.1% to almost 1.67 million m\u00b3. It accounted for more than 38% of EU softwood lumber shipments to MENA during the first seven months.<\/p>\n

Algeria was the other large market to grow, with imports from the EU rising 2.0% to 637,144 m\u00b3. This moved Algeria slightly ahead of Saudi Arabia, where purchases dropped to 627,238 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

The contrast with Morocco was substantial. EU shipments there fell 27.1% to 485,192 m\u00b3, a reduction of 180,000 m\u00b3 in one year. Tunisia was down 8.9% and Libya by 33%.<\/p>\n

Egypt's stronger performance was also visible in its wider import market. Total Egyptian lumber imports from all supplying countries rose sharply in June, following a weaker May. Unlike the Gulf states, Egyptian import routes do not depend on passage through the Strait of Hormuz, leaving its Mediterranean and Red Sea ports largely outside the transport disruption affecting markets farther east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Gulf shipments fall by more than a third<\/strong><\/p>\n

The six Gulf Cooperation Council markets show the sharpest change in the figures.<\/p>\n

Combined EU exports to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain fell from around 1.34 million m\u00b3 in January-July 2025 to 871,000 m\u00b3 this year, a decline of roughly 35%. About 473,000 m\u00b3 disappeared from these markets alone.<\/p>\n

The UAE recorded the largest percentage-adjusted loss among the major destinations, with shipments falling 60.8% to 137,055 m\u00b3. Qatar and Bahrain were down by more than 62%, while Kuwait fell 46.9%. Only Oman remained close to last year's level.<\/p>\n

Part of the decline predates the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. EU shipments to the UAE were already below the previous year's level in January. The shipping crisis then made an already weaker market substantially more difficult to serve.<\/p>\n

The practical consequences for European lumber exporters have been considerable. An Austrian spruce shipment bound for Qatar earlier this year was diverted to Khor Fakkan on the UAE's east coast instead of Jebel Ali, moved by truck to Abu Dhabi and then transferred back to sea for delivery to Doha. The alternative route more than tripled normal container freight costs and added weeks to delivery schedules.<\/p>\n

Ports outside the strait have since taken a much larger role. Cargo has been routed through Khor Fakkan and Fujairah, while Oman has provided another entry point for goods subsequently moved by road into the UAE and other Gulf markets. The extra handling and long-distance trucking have kept goods moving, but at considerably higher cost.<\/p>\n

For European softwood lumber, this has hit markets where transport already represents a large part of the delivered price. Saudi Arabia remained substantial at 627,238 m\u00b3, but its purchases were down 21.1%. Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait are much smaller markets, yet their dependence on routes behind Hormuz made them particularly exposed to the disruption.<\/p>\n

Pine holds up better than spruce<\/strong><\/p>\n

The product mix also changed markedly.<\/p>\n

EU pine exports to MENA fell only 4.1% to around 2.65 million m\u00b3 during January-July. Spruce shipments, by contrast, dropped 27.1% to approximately 1.59 million m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Spruce therefore accounted for most of the reduction in European volume.<\/p>\n

The difference is closely tied to where the timber is sold. Egypt and Algeria continued to absorb large quantities of pine, helping stabilise that side of the trade. Spruce has greater exposure to construction markets in the Gulf, where demand and logistics both deteriorated sharply during 2026.<\/p>\n

Smaller softwood categories did not materially change the regional picture. Some recorded growth, but their volumes remain too limited to offset the fall in spruce.<\/p>\n

The value figures provide little evidence of a major regional price movement. With total export value down almost in line with volume, the average customs value remained around EUR 229\/m\u00b3. The change in MENA trade during the first seven months was therefore primarily a question of volume and destination rather than a large shift in the average declared value of the lumber shipped.<\/p>\n

MENA trade becomes more concentrated<\/strong><\/p>\n

Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Morocco received approximately 3.42 million m\u00b3 between January and July, equal to about 78% of all EU softwood lumber exports to MENA.<\/p>\n

Egypt alone bought more than 1.67 million m\u00b3. By comparison, the UAE, Tunisia, Libya, Lebanon, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain together received roughly 606,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

The regional market has consequently become much more dependent on a handful of destinations. Egypt provided the largest offset to the losses elsewhere, Algeria remained steady, while Saudi Arabia and Morocco still absorbed considerable volumes despite their declines.<\/p>\n

July gives some reason to distinguish between the weak seven-month total and conditions at the end of the period. EU exports for the month were almost unchanged from July 2025, after much steeper falls earlier in the year.<\/p>\n

That recovery has not restored the 700,000 m\u00b3 lost since January. It does, however, leave European exporters entering the final months of 2026 with a different market from the one seen in the first quarter: Egypt is buying more, Algeria remains firm, while a large part of the Gulf business is operating with smaller volumes and much more difficult logistics.<\/p>\n

Turkey is excluded from the MENA figures. EU softwood lumber exports to Turkey were also lower during the period, with a value of approximately EUR 23.9 million.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
