Finnish sawmill Tervolan Saha ja H\u00f6yl\u00e4\u00e4m\u00f6 is preparing another step in the modernisation of its production site, with three new batch kilns scheduled to be installed alongside an upgrade of its existing drying equipment.<\/p>\n
The company has ordered three forklift-loaded batch kilns from Valutec, all equipped with pressure frames and the Valmatics 4.0 control system. At the same time, nine existing batch kilns will be upgraded to the same control platform, while their temperature measurement systems will also be renewed.<\/p>\n
Installation is due to begin in early 2027, with the new and modernised kilns expected to enter production during the spring.<\/p>\n
The project follows a much larger investment completed by Tervolan Saha in 2023, when the Finnish family-owned company installed a new saw line, log handling and debarking equipment, a 30-bin green sorting and stacking line and a new production control system. The equipment was housed in a new 3,000 m\u00b2 production building and gave the company scope to increase sawing volumes.<\/p>\n
The latest investment moves further downstream. As sawmill throughput increases, drying capacity can become a constraint, particularly when mills need to handle a wider range of dimensions and moisture specifications without increasing lead times.<\/p>\n
Tervolan Saha said the investment is intended to improve control of the drying process, production efficiency and its ability to meet customer quality and delivery requirements.<\/p>\n
The company, founded in 1956, has also recently undergone a generational ownership change, with ownership transferred in 2026 from Lea and Juha Kokkonen to six representatives of the family's third generation. The former owners remain involved during the transition. The company employs around 28 people.<\/p>\n
Kiln investment remains active across Nordic sawmills<\/strong><\/p>\n The Tervola project is part of a broader series of drying investments announced by Nordic sawmills over the past two years.<\/p>\n Some projects have focused on large continuous kilns designed to absorb increased sawmill output, while others have involved batch kilns, giving producers greater flexibility across dimensions, species and drying schedules. Modernisation of existing kiln fleets has also become a significant part of recent investment, particularly through replacement of control and measurement systems rather than complete rebuilding.<\/p>\n Publicly announced projects involving Valutec since 2024 include investments by sawmills in Finland and Sweden as well as installations in Central Europe and North America.
