Finland\u2019s roundwood market remained unusually quiet in August, with purchasing activity failing to show the seasonal recovery normally seen after midsummer.<\/p>\n

Industrial roundwood purchases increased only slightly from July and were 17% lower than in August 2025. Compared with the average August level of the previous five years, the decline was even steeper, at more than one-third.<\/p>\n

The weakness was not limited to a single month. From January to August, roundwood purchases were 19% below the corresponding period last year and also 19% below the five-year average.<\/p>\n

The latest figures from the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) point to a market in which buying volumes remain depressed even though price movements have become much smaller than earlier in the year.<\/p>\n

Sawlog prices hold firm<\/strong><\/p>\n

Standing-sale prices for coniferous sawlogs were largely unchanged in August.<\/p>\n

Spruce logs averaged EUR 83.25\/m\u00b3, unchanged from July and only 1% below the average level recorded in 2025. Pine logs also held steady month on month at EUR 77.35\/m\u00b3, although this was 5% below the 2025 average.<\/p>\n

Birch logs were the only major sawlog assortment to record a noticeable monthly increase. The average standing-sale price rose 2% from July to EUR 63.16\/m\u00b3, although the level remained 5% below the 2025 average.<\/p>\n

The relatively stable sawlog prices contrast with the sharp decline in purchasing volumes, indicating that Finnish mills have not responded to weaker procurement by forcing a major correction in sawlog prices.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Pulpwood remains well below 2025 levels<\/strong><\/p>\n

The adjustment has been much more pronounced in pulpwood.<\/p>\n

Standing-sale spruce pulpwood averaged EUR 24.97\/m\u00b3 in August, up 1% from July but 25% below the 2025 average. Pine pulpwood reached EUR 22.89\/m\u00b3, also 1% higher month on month but 27% below last year\u2019s average. Birch pulpwood slipped 1% from July to EUR 23.10\/m\u00b3 and was likewise 27% below the 2025 average.<\/p>\n

The decline from the market peak is considerably larger.<\/p>\n

According to Luke, average standing-sale pulpwood prices have fallen by around EUR 12\/m\u00b3, or about one-third, from the highs reached in summer 2025.<\/p>\n

The correction has been strongest in thinnings. Real pulpwood prices from first thinnings have already fallen by around 45% from their peak, while prices from regeneration fellings have declined less sharply.<\/p>\n

Delivery-sale prices also retreat<\/strong><\/p>\n

Delivery-sale pulpwood prices were more stable for coniferous assortments in August.<\/p>\n

Spruce pulpwood remained unchanged from July at EUR 43.24\/m\u00b3, while pine pulpwood declined 2% to EUR 40.44\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Birch pulpwood recorded the largest monthly movement, falling 6% to EUR 41.65\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Compared with the 2025 average, delivery-sale prices were down 19% for spruce pulpwood, 22% for pine and 20% for birch.<\/p>\n

Luke estimates that delivery-sale pulpwood prices have fallen by roughly one-quarter from the peaks reached a little more than a year ago.<\/p>\n

Autumn procurement starts from a weak base<\/strong><\/p>\n

August normally marks a clear pickup in Finnish roundwood purchasing after the quieter summer period. This year, however, the increase from July was only a few percent.<\/p>\n

That leaves the autumn procurement season starting from a much weaker base than usual.<\/p>\n

The contrast between relatively stable sawlog prices and sharply lower pulpwood prices is also becoming more visible. Spruce and pine sawlogs remain close to the levels seen last year, while pulpwood has already undergone a substantial correction.<\/p>\n

For sawmills, the August figures show little evidence of relief from log costs despite the sharp slowdown in timber purchasing. For forest owners, the market remains split: sawlog prices have held up relatively well, while pulpwood values have moved much further away from the highs reached in 2025.<\/p>\n

The next months will show whether industrial buyers return more actively to the market during the autumn procurement period or continue to keep purchasing volumes below normal levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
