Storm Johannes left Setra with a problem that had less to do with recovering timber than with time.<\/p>\n

Large volumes of spruce and pine had been pushed onto the ground almost at once. Once the trees were separated from their roots, the clock started. If the logs remained there too long, especially through warm weather, blue stain could spread through the sapwood and sharply reduce the number of markets and products in which the timber could be used.<\/p>\n

Setra\u2019s response has been to try to buy time at every stage of the chain.<\/p>\n

At its Kastet sawmill, the company has installed pumps, pipelines and sprinkler posts after receiving temporary permission to water stored logs. A dedicated weather station helps manage the system, which has capacity for around 35,000 m\u00b3 of roundwood.<\/p>\n

Water does not improve the timber. It slows the process that destroys value.<\/p>\n

By keeping stored logs cooler, Setra can delay the development of blue stain and other forms of deterioration, giving the sawmills more time to process timber arriving from storm-hit forests.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the company has pushed more wood through its mills. Shift arrangements have been changed, summer shutdowns shortened and additional overtime introduced. Production at F\u00e4rila and Heby has also been adjusted to absorb larger volumes of storm timber, with higher output scheduled to continue through autumn and winter.<\/p>\n

The strategy is simple: saw as much as possible, store the rest under better conditions and avoid allowing good sawlogs to become lower-value raw material.<\/p>\n

A colour problem with a large price tag<\/strong><\/p>\n

Blue stain does not usually reduce the strength of lumber, but it changes its appearance.<\/p>\n

That distinction matters enormously commercially.<\/p>\n

A board intended for a visible interior or other appearance-sensitive application may no longer meet the required grade once staining becomes obvious. The same board can still be perfectly suitable for structural or pressure-treated use.<\/p>\n

The task for Setra is therefore not only to stop staining where possible, but also to make sure affected timber ends up in the right product.<\/p>\n

Logs are inspected when they arrive at the mill. Material with excessive staining can be rejected from sawlog production and redirected into other uses, including pulpwood.<\/p>\n

The rest continues through the sawmill, where sawing patterns and product specifications can be adjusted according to the quality of the raw material.<\/p>\n

After drying, scanners grade individual boards and determine which products and customers can accept them.<\/p>\n

That sorting can be worth hundreds of Swedish kronor per cubic metre.<\/p>\n

Setra estimates that lumber which has to be downgraded to Grade VII because of blue stain can lose around SEK 600\u20131,000\/m\u00b3 (approximately EUR 53\u201389\/m\u00b3) in value.<\/p>\n

Across tens of thousands of cubic metres, the difference becomes substantial.<\/p>\n

Export markets become part of the storm strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n

The ability to sell stained lumber outside appearance-sensitive markets is therefore central to Setra\u2019s response.<\/p>\n

In the United States, the company supplies planed structural lumber under grading systems where blue stain can be accepted. The UK provides another important outlet, particularly for pine destined for pressure treatment.<\/p>\n

Setra says around 80% of pine structural lumber in the UK is pressure treated, making surface appearance less critical than in many visible applications.<\/p>\n

That gives the company room to redirect lumber rather than simply accepting a downgrade.<\/p>\n

For a sawmill dealing with storm timber, this flexibility is nearly as important as processing capacity. The value of the wood depends not only on what arrives at the mill, but on whether the mill has a customer for what comes out.<\/p>\n

A stained board that is rejected by one market may still retain much of its value in another.<\/p>\n

More than half already through the system<\/strong><\/p>\n

Setra says slightly more than half of the storm-felled timber covered by the recovery effort has now been processed.<\/p>\n

The summer weather has also helped. Much of the timber still lying in affected forests remains in relatively good condition, giving Setra and forest owners\u2019 association Mellanskog additional time to move it.<\/p>\n

But the remaining volumes still have to be handled before deterioration accelerates.<\/p>\n

That leaves Setra balancing three things at once: how quickly logs can be removed from the forest, how much inventory can be protected at the mills and how much lumber the market can absorb once production increases.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s watering installation at Kastet is one visible part of that response, but the more important work is happening across the entire chain \u2014 transport, log storage, sawmill scheduling, grading and sales.<\/p>\n

Storm timber loses value gradually and then suddenly.<\/p>\n
