Europe's softwood lumber industry is entering the second half of 2026 under growing pressure. After more than a year of exceptionally expensive sawlogs, sluggish construction activity and disappointing order intake, several of the continent's largest producers have reduced output or temporarily idled production lines. The latest decision by Stora Enso to suspend production at one of its Finnish sawmills is the clearest indication yet that even Europe's largest producers are prioritising margin protection over production volumes.
